The Northern Ireland Protocol, one of the most important components of the UK’s Brexit divorce agreement, will be debated today in the House of Lords.
Lord David Frost, the Brexit Minister, is believed to be preparing for the debate as tensions rise and Ireland becomes increasingly eager for the European Union to agree on a new trade deal with the UK.
Lord Frost and Maros Sefcovic, his EU counterpart, will restart talks in an attempt to reach an agreement.
Brexit supporting Lords are reportedly pressing Lord Frost to invoke Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol, a safeguard that allows both parties to take formal action if the agreement has unexpected consequences.
Lord Frost wants to alter elements of the Protocol in order to eliminate EU-mandated customs controls, but Brussels refuses to renegotiate the process.
