In a move that some would say was hypocritical, former EU Brexit Negotiator and the man who tried to stop Brexit Michel Barnier has said that he would like to see a referendum on French “Legal Sovereignty” from EU courts.
This move comes after Michel Barnier threw his hat into the ring to stand in the French Presidential election next year. While Brexiteers know who he is in the UK, he isn’t a well-known politician in his homeland of France.
Mr Barnier is hoping to rise in the polls after he shocked his beloved EU Commission partners with a statement saying France should “no longer be subject to the rulings of the CJEU or the ECHR”. This was said during a political debate where the former EU Brexit negotiator continued to say that he wanted to “rebuild French influence” at a time where Germanys “domination” in the EU continued to grow.
Michel has reassured French voters that if they were to regain national sovereignty from EU courts, France would be able to control immigration that has been flooding into France in recent times.
This admission has sparked people to question Barneirs words from both sides of the aisle, wondering if he is only saying what he is saying to gain votes and traction. One French front runner Clement Beaune has his suspicions saying: “One wonders how a sentence like that can come from such a committed European.”.
European Liberal Forum member Julien Hoez was also shocked by Barnier’s words saying: “Michel Barnier is giving a masterclass on how to destroy your career and legacy in the desperate hope of looking electable to an electorate that just straight up dislikes you regardless.”
Renew Group member was said to be “dumbfounded” by Barnier’s words as he knows “The primacy of European law is a foundation of our Union.”
“If he wanted to destroy Europe, he wouldn’t go about it any differently.”
What’s your opinion? Is Barnier saying what he’s saying due to the increase in populism in Franc? Is he trying to make headway by sounding like some who want to put French interests above those in Brussels? Hit the emoji below and click the comment button to leave your thoughts.
