Yanis Varoufakis labels European Council President Charles Michel ignorant after his supposed unifying statement BACKFIRES.

In a fiery out exchange, former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis hit back at European Council President Charles Michel, who last night insinuated the EU had been the saviour of Greece.

The European Council President said: “Since you, Greece, formally joined our common Europe, which had always been yours, you have known the best years in your history.

“They have permanently put you on the path to peace and prosperity.”

With this comment, the former Finance Minister hit back hard, saying: “Your ignorance of our history is forgiven.”

“Why should you know, for instance, that our growth rate was far greater, and that our democratisation deeper, before we joined the EEC?”

“It is the slavishness of our PM, watching you speak, that will remain forever unforgiven.”

The angry comment by Varoufakis was posted after the Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the decision to join the EU long ago had benefitted both sides.
