As we go into the final stretch of the London Mayoral Election race, Sadiq Khan has had to justify why there has been another massive increase in fares across all public transport in London.
Khan tries to palm off blame onto the Tory Government for this increase after Transport for London TfL had to seek emergency funds from the government to run. Yet, Khan’s mishandling of TFL meant emergency funds were needed so they could continue to operate.
Khan said that “Londoners know that I have done everything possible to make public transport more affordable since I became Mayor”.
While Khan gives the impression that he has done everything to make public transport fares more affordable, transport fares for the massive majority of Londoners have increased year on year, making it unaffordable for some.
Khans complete statement read: “Londoners know that I have done everything possible to make public transport more affordable since I became Mayor – including introducing the unlimited Hopper bus fare and freezing all TfL fares since taking office – saving the average London household over £200.
“Unfortunately, this year, Ministers insisted on an RPI+1 per cent fares increase in order for TfL to get the emergency Government support needed as a consequence of the global pandemic.
“Public transport should be affordable to all, so I am pleased that I was able to fight off even worse Government proposals to scrap free travel for under 18’s and concessions for over 60’s as well as bigger fares increase.”
How do you think Khan has done as London Mayor?
