A previous top Eurocrat, Romano Prodi, has come out stating the EU will never become a superpower as it’s own rules around foreign policy will restrict the bloc. Prodi said the EU had been restricted through its foreign policy. He said While all decisions need a unanimous decision, the bloc will always be stood still. Mr Prodi said: “There’s only one enemy to Europe.
“Not Russia, not China, not the United States. Europe’s enemy is unanimity.”
Amid growing tensions between the EU and Turkey, the Italian said the divided bloc faces the “§incredible absurdity of having Turkey and Russia as almost exclusive players in Mediterranean policy”.
If one member state out of the 27 rejects any foreign policy decision, then nothing passes. Recently the EU has been held back on being able to make a decisive decision, especially around slapping sanctions on Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko due to certain member states disagreeing.
Speaking to Politico Mr Prodi said: “In this moment I’m a pessimist about that — unanimity will go on in the major issues, at least in the foreseeable period of time, unless there will be a quick realisation that this will kill Europe.”
In recent months the EU commission President has been trying to change the system from being unanimous division to a majority decision to allow the EU to move forward but whether the other member states will allow this is another thing.
As stated, the EU’s downfall is the EU itself.
