Today the EU hierarchy have sidestepped Macron after his threat of holding firm on fisheries which could destroy the EU’s chance of a trade deal.
Both the UK and EU are going to be organising mini deals on the areas which they agree on and leave the talks on fisheries to one side. This is to make sure that the outcome of these trade talks isn’t held ransom by threats from Macron and other fishing states around the EU.
If the trade deal isn’t completed due to fisheries, then these mini deal are in place to secure certain sectors from being hit. The warning came that the trade deal would be held up due to fisheries making the German car industry extremely nervous. The Car industry lobbyists to took Merkel to demand action to back off from bringing the whole trade deal down.
This move by the EU to sidestep the French will come as a blow especially as Macrons Presidential campaign for re-election isn’t far away. Fishers in France and other fishing nations have threatened in previous months that they would blockade ports and refuse fish and other goods coming to mainland Europe.
Is this going to be the start of the collapse of cohesion between member states in the EU? Will nations sit back as certain countries pull the short straw for other nations to prosper at their expense? We will soon find out.
It seems the last person Boris Johnson has to persuade on fishing rights is French President Emmanuel Macron. The Prime Minister is to issue an ultimatum - our fishing proposal or nothing. Great from the PM.https://t.co/gKjDsuZzjy— Get Britain Out (@GetBritainOut) October 3, 2020
