With President Macron refusing to back down on his redlines around fisheries, Angela Merkel is now under pressure from the German Car industry to remove the block. The worry coming from the German Car Industry is Macron’s position could destroy the entire Brexit deal leaving many sectors in the EU in tatters.
Barnier has been told to meet with Macron in an effort to soften his stance around fisheries. However, with the pressure on Macron from the french fishing industry, it will be difficult to see much movement.
This battle is now between the German car industry and French Fisheries; both industries are pressurising the leaders of their nation, telling them not to back down.
Reported in The Daily Express reported, Brexit Expert Professor Anand Menon as saying: “They are united, but they don’t agree.
“If you went into detail, and went to the 27 capitals, and asked what they wanted from a Brexit deal, they would all come up with different ideas.
“For the Germans, the notion that the trade-in automobiles will be hampered because of French fishermen is nothing short of barking mad.”

While progress had been made, significant gaps remain. We agreed that it's important to find an agreement as strong basis for a strategic relationship.
