Yesterday the UK Home Secretary Priti Patel said she is committed to achieving the “biggest overhaul” of the UK asylum system in “decades”. Priti told the Conservative Party Conference that the current system is “fundamentally broke.” And needs to be fixed.
The new system is said to be introduced when the transition period finishes. The new system will be a “firm and fair” asylum system with deportations for those “who have no claim for protection”.
Priti is to be bringing forward legislation so she can quickly deliver the mass “overhaul of our asylum system in decades”. Priti said: “After decades of inaction by successive governments, we will address the moral, legal, practical problems with this broken system. Because what exists now is neither firm nor fair.”
These comments from Priti Patel sparked a reaction from Nigel Farage who said on Twitter: “More empty words from @pritipatel. This speech happens every year at Tory conference, and nothing ever changes.”
