This morning, Andrew Marr put the new leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey under pressure when he asked “what’s the point of the Liberal Democrats” now Brexit is over?.
This question was asked after the Liberal Democrats put all their eggs in the “Boll***s to Brexit” basket which destroyed the parties support after nearly all their seats were wiped out including the then leader Jo Swindon who dramatically claimed she was going to become the next Prime Minister but Instead lost her seat.
Andrew Marr asked: “The question many people will be asking themselves is what are the Liberal Democrats really for? What makes you distinct? “Over the last few years, the answer has been very, very clear. “You were the pro-EU, the pro-European party. You campaigned very, very hard for that. “Now you say it’s off the agenda for the next few years. “But in the long-term, eventually, you must surely be the rejoin party?
“You will become the ‘let’s get back into the EU’ party, won’t you?” Ed Davey said: that their values haven’t changed and they will always “remain pro-Europeans”. Ed went onto say the party is going to be pushing a radical reform approach to the care system as well as green economic plans.
When asked whether the Liberal Democrats will be pushing to re-enter the EU, Ed said: “Well, I recognise we have had three very disappointing elections in a row. “We need to listen to people first before we decide our manifesto. “People aren’t talking about Brexit anymore; they are talking about coronavirus.”
As you can tell, the Liberal Democrats don’t have the option to push to go back into the EU as the balance of power has shifted so dramatically away from the remain agenda. Even if they wanted to continue with their pro-remain vision, they do not have the numbers make an impact. What’re your thoughts? What is the point of the Liberal Democrats now the Brexit debate is over?
