Brexit trade talks between the united kingdom and the EU have descended into insults after Michel Barnier stated Britain is regaining control of its waters although not necessarily the fish inside them. The EU’s chief negotiator said the UK would recover the complete sovereignty’ of its oceans as part of its decision to split from Brussels.
Speaking at an event hosted by a Dublin think tank Mr Barnier said Britain was not able to compromise on critical topics however UK sources hit back and accused him of a’deliberate and misleading caricature of our suggestions’. One Brexiteer Conservative MP said:’I don’t feel that they believe that we’re serious. We’ve set out what we need, we’ve been absolutely straight: Our fishing waters are ours, palms off.
‘Why should we give up what’s ours? At the end of the day that a deal will be done. He can keep saying ridiculous items, but nobody is taking any notice.’Michel Barnier stated that the UK would have’full sovereignty’ on its oceans, but the fish inside these are’another story.’ At present, the EEZ of each EU member state is merged into one large zone that could be accessed by sailors from all around Europe.
This rhetoric from Barnier shows the UK has the upper hand when it comes to these negotiations. The UK has an extremely strong hand on fisheries and the EU fear the UK being a truly independent nation hence why they continue their demands on a “level playing field”.
