Former Brexit Party MEP – After Brexit Boris should “ban supertrawlers, increase quotas for British fishermen” this would “re-energise our coastal communities” and economy.

Former Brexit Party MEP states the UK’s fishing industry could become massively re-energised if the government “inspire the nation” with an eat more fish campaign.

Belinda de Lucy told the Express: “Brexit could give our fishing industry sufficient opportunity to thrive.

“With Brexit we can ban supertrawlers, increase quotas for British fishermen, regulate the industry locally in a way that best suits our interests and the environment, stop throwing dead fish back into the sea and inspire a whole new generation of new fishing families to re-energise our coastal communities, economy and health of our nation.

“There is so much money to be made, jobs to be had and fish to be caught and sold.”

The issue of fishing rights has yet to be reconciled in the current post-Brexit trade talks with the EU.

“We are an island and yet pathetically can’t sustain a fishing industry in 2020, it’s ludicrous.

“We have gold at our feet for families and communities that only fools wouldn’t utilise.

“Currently, there is barely anything left for our fishermen after quotas, over-regulation and the sea bed destroying, dolphin killing EU supertrawlers hoovering up everything.”

She said: “There are over 300 different species of fish in our waters, we could have a revolution in British cooking, TV Chefs and restaurants that focus on locally caught fish cooked in new and palate tantalising ways.

“Brits should be inspired to buy more, langoustine, crab and mackerel instead of exporting all the fish we catch and importing all we eat.”
