CHIEF UK NEGOTIATOR – FULL STATEMENT: EU insists “we must accept continuity with EU state aid and fisheries policy”.

With the seventh round of trade talks finished, UK chief negotiator, David Frost releases a statement on state of progress. So far no progress has been made. Negotiations have been at a stalemate since June and still no progress has been made. Below is David Frosts statement in full.

“We have just concluded the seventh round of negotiations with the EU.  As I said last week, agreement is still possible, and it is still our goal, but it is clear that it will not be easy to achieve. Substantive work continues to be necessary across a range of different areas of potential UK-EU future cooperation if we are to deliver it.

“We have had useful discussions this week but there has been little progress.
“The EU is still insisting not only that we must accept continuity with EU state aid and fisheries policy, but also that this must be agreed before any further substantive work can be done in any other area of the negotiation, including on legal texts.”
Barnier demands agreement on Fisheries and Level playing field before progress in negotiations can continue.

“This makes it unnecessarily difficult to make progress. There are other significant areas which remain to be resolved and, even where there is a broad understanding between negotiators, there is a lot of detail to work through. Time is short for both sides.”

“We have been clear from the outset about the principles underlying the UK approach. We are seeking a relationship which ensures we regain sovereign control of our own laws, borders, and waters, and centred upon a trading relationship based on an FTA like those the EU has concluded with a range of other international partners, together with practical arrangements for cooperation in areas such as aviation, scientific programmes, and law enforcement.”

“When the EU accepts this reality in all areas of the negotiation, it will be much easier to make progress.”

“We will continue to work hard to reach an agreement.  Chief Negotiators and their teams have agreed to remain in close contact over the next two weeks before the next Round in London in the week of 7 September.”

  1. Whatever the cost I firmly believe that we must not relinquish any part of our sovereignty or territory. We desire and need our democracy to be accountable to the citizens of Britain and in no way to be controlled by an unelected foriegn power

  2. Just leave asap, we don’t need them at all. We were with out them years ago, and we can be without them again. Show them we mean it, and just leave, they think we must do what they say, who do they think they are. Time to take control of our own country.

  3. The EU has free trade agreements with various non EU countries , so this continued blocking unless we virtually ” remain ” , is quite simply that it does not and will not accept that we are leaving whatever the offer or do not offer ie. the EU intends forcing BRITAIN to remain because it is in financial trouble if we leave .
With this in mind , we have zero to lose by leaving immediately on WTO terms ——- trade negotiations can be continued , should the EU wish to , once we have left . That way it will have no doubts we have gone

  4. If they won’t this to go to the wire it’s for a reason all they’ve ever done is delay it must benefit them in some way

  5. There is no room for compromise here on the EU position..it is unreachable. They wouldn’t accept it if they were us and their lack of reasonableness makes further meetings a waste of time..

  6. The only way the UK will get clean brake and what the majority voted for I’d to tell them that the implementation is finnished and we are leaving on WTO rules, the UK is their largest export market in which they enjoy a huge 70 to 90 billion surplus, unless they want to shoot themselves in the foot they will have to offer a no strings deal, this is about reality and business practice , if it was up to me I would tell the EU that Barnier has to have no part in any future negotiations, since he has lost touch with reality. I have ran businesses all of my life and can see how strong a hand the UK holds.

    1. Common sense..Well said! Can you take on the negotiations..Should take about 90 seconds…..Our fisherman will send you free fish for life!!!

  7. The EU seems determined to maintain an element of control over the UK’s affairs and persists in discriminating against the UK in formulation of a trade deal. Perhaps it is time to discontinue discussions, prepare for trade on WTO terms and return to the issue of an EU trade deal after transition.

  8. The people spoke in June 2016 and again in December 2019. Please don’t let the people down, if you do the Tories will be finished 😢 Our borders, our laws, our waters, are what you promised us all please don’t forget your promises to the people and make our country great again 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

  9. We must not relinquish our sovereignty, fishing waters, taxes, borders at all cost. We must leave the dictatorship of the EU as soon as possible.

  10. Do not give in to these bullies, they must realise we are leaving the EU,it does not matter that we are only 22miles away from mainland europe,we are a separate nation just like Canada and we want our own laws and fishing grounds without interference from the arrogant EU.Let’s just leave asap.

  11. It’s the automatic acceptance, eg, hotel accomm, pocket money etc and other benefits that’s galling. They have already taken over large parts of our British country. We cannot be expected to fill our country from the rest of the world. Those who come over on boats are not short of money. Their large families will surely follow. We have enough problems of our own to deal with. Sorry world, we are full.!

  12. They think we are soft and will eventually submit to their bullying.
We must brace ourselves for the inevitable “No Deal Brexit” that we all voted for, and stand our ground. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Keep up the good work and let’s start the transition soon.

  13. Europe has brought us nothing but grief Two World Wars and millions of dead for what? A Franco- German controlled Europe. We have fought the French for centuries and the Germans twice in the last century. They are our competitors not our friends. Trade with them on WTO terms and be wary of them on any other cooperation.

  14. Our fathers fought for our freedom we must do what the people want all they are doing is blackmail us no deal is the answer we give

  15. does it matter what the general public want.our spineless mps will do what they want which is anything to keep their wallets full. Our government are a joke the laughing stock of the world. Spineless pathetic and greedy ,they should all be behind bars for what they have done to this once great country

  16. They think that their bullying tactics will beat us into submission, our fishermen, our laws, our borders, when will it sink in.
No payment if they choose to bully the UK.
If by 30th December 2020 no deal, then WTO , no payment

  17. The position with the EU is getting ridiculous, in fact laughable. Why doesn’t Mr Frost inform his counter part that unless they respect our red lines and agree to bide by them, that there is no reason for there to be a meeting.Let them stew in their own juice. Our decision to leave the EU was not a monetary decision ,it was a strike for freedom. We have it now so let’s go our separate way and forge our own future free from the EU

  18. They are NOT in the driving seat. They have more to lose that us. Do not give any ground over to them. We have finished with the EU.
