As the mass invasion of illegal migrant boats continue to cross the channel to enter British waters illegally, the government understands its unacceptable for this to keep happening.
Yesterday MP’s launched an inquiry to fully understand why there has been a massive increase in small boat crossings in the English Channel to get into Britain.
The number of Illegal migrants who have entered Britain illegally by crossing the English Channel in a small boat has sailed passed 1000 people in July. The amount that has come in July is more than May and June put together.
That figure of a thousand is a baseline figure on how many we know have come to Britain. We don’t know the extent of how many have made it to Britain by beaching their boats on Britains southern shore and absconding.
The Commons Home Affairs Committee will be looking at the role the criminal gangs play in facilitating these crossings, as well as the responses of the UK and French authorities.
The ministers will be also be looking at the risk to migrants’ lives from attempting the crossing in small vessels – and the response of UK authorities, in particular unaccompanied children.
Natalie Elphicke, Conservative MP for Dover, tweeted her view that the “unacceptable situation” must be “brought to an end”.
Labour MP Yvette Cooper will chair the full enquiry.
