They had been penalised to the amount of £1.62million in a Truro court. The hearing demonstrated across two days, the Spanish companies had falsified logbooks, failed to register the transfer of fish between vessels, gave false readings for weighing fish and trivial of fishing quotas. He said”wholesale falsification of official instruction” had contributed to”systematic, ongoing and cynical misuse of the EU fishing quota system over 18 months”.
Mr Cottle added:” [This was a] flagrant, repeated and prolonged-term abuse of regulations.”The fish targeted [hake] was at that moment, the species of fish on the point of collapse and adherence to quotas was seen as critical to the survival of these species.”
The court heard how the two companies were landing fish according to allowances awarded to British sailors under the CFP of the EU and sent their ships into waters. Two vessels were involved. However, a lot of other boats, capable of industrial-scale fishing are owned by the companies. The offences dated back to 2009-2010. They were fined £925,000 on a confiscation order plus £195,000 in prices and an additional fine of £250,000 enforced on both businesses. Two skippers who acted under the family’s instructions were fined £5,000 each. One campaigner argued that the penalties must have gone farther while highlighting defects with the CFP in the moment of the EU, while the fines were hefty.
“The Vidals’ right to fish ought to be removed completely.”She also emphasised how the quota system of the EU was vulnerable to illegal activity such as this. Ms Densham added: “The system that enabled this to occur has to be fixed, this case isn’t a one-off. It’s a symptom of the stupid fishing rules of Europe.”The Vidals were permitted to fish under UK flags, with UK quota, and also receive enormous EU subsidies, with none of the profits ever feeding back to the UK economy.”The system is skewed in favour of rich, powerful, industrial-scale fishing businesses when actually it ought to be encouraging low-impact, sustainable fishermen.”
