The funding boost is expected to create 20,000 skilled jobs. The Treasury said the cash would pay for the demolition of old buildings and preparing the grounds at the 4,500-acre SSI steelworks site in Redcar on Teesside, which went into liquidation in 2015. The Conservative Party is intent on rewarding northern areas in former Labour heartlands which voted Conservative in last month’s General Election.

The Tories took the Redcar constituency and a slew of other seats across the North-east and Yorkshire.

The steelworks scheme was set up by Conservative Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen to promote economic growth through the South Tees Development Corporation, which has managed the site since since August 2017.

More than 2,200 people lost their jobs when Thai-based SSI went into liquidation.

When complete, the new development park hopes to attract clean energy, manufacturing and technology companies.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Rishi Sunak said: “This is our levelling-up agenda in action, as we back Teesside’s exciting ambitions to be a global trading centre with great jobs for world-leading industries.” And Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom added: “The SSI site is perfect for redevelopment.

“This funding will help to get the exciting and ambitious plans from the South Tees Development Corporation off the ground, delivering as many as 20,000 skilled jobs over the next two decades.”

Mayor Mr Houchen, also chairman of the development corporation, said the public investment would “accelerate” its ability to target interest from businesses. He said: “I have always said I would be the first to ask Government for more money when we needed it for the redevelopment of the former Redcar steelworks site.

“So, after asking, I’m pleased we will be receiving £71million – another significant step to help us breathe new life into an area devastated following the closure.”
