A Labour MP has come under fire for branding plans to celebrate Brexit “pathetic” and a “waste of money and time” on a BBC panel.Bridget Phillipson made the stunning remarks when she was questioned about plans for Big Ben to bong at 11pm on January 31, when Britain leaves the EU. Her morose response sparked a barrage of Twitter reaction, with one user branding her a “sulky Remoaner” while criticised her “whinging”.
Conservative MP Mark Francois, who put forward the amendment, demanded the occasion “be marked by the sounding of the hourly chimes including eleven strikes of the principal bell (Big Ben) of the Great Clock in the Elizabeth Tower of the Houses of Parliament”.
The amendment has so far been signed by more than 40 MPs, however Brexit Minister James Duddridge played down that celebration.
He told the BBC: “My understanding is the Big Ben amendment has not been elected as an amendment to debate.”
Ms Phillipson refused to entertain the discussion of Brexit celebrations during her appearance on BBC Politics Live this afternoon.
BBC host Adam Fleming asked her whether she would be celebrating the date like the Brexiteer MPs.
The Labour MP for Sunderland said: “I don’t think I’ll be celebrating. I just don’t understand what this amendment is about. I think it is frankly pathetic.
“If that is how they want to waste public money then wonderful for them.”
Fleming asked: “But it’s okay for Big Ben to bong at New Years? Doesn’t that cost money?”
Ms Phillipson responded: “To do it for when there are big questions about Brexit. There are big amendments that government backbenchers could be tabling about the impact on jobs
“Instead they are wasting their time on this. It’s a waste of everyone’s time.”
There was a swift Twitter backlash to the remarks, with viewers claiming it was proof Labour still “just don’t accept Brexit”.
One Brexiteer remarked: “It’s a bit of fun, she dismisses it as a pathetic waste of money.”
One commented: “Labour woman on Politics Live showing us again that they hate the normal people in the UK. Dismissing the idea to “bong” Big Ben at 11pm on 31st.”
Referencing the Addams Family, one user said: “Labour Morticia wannabe has the gall to trot out ‘cliff edge’ in her anti-Brexit rant.”
Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage is planning a 10,000-strong, £100,000 “Brexit Celebration Party” to mark Britain’s formal exit from the European Union.
Acting Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has said that Nigel Farage’s plans are a “nonsense” that should be stopped.
Speaking on LBC, Mr Davey said that the Greater London Authority should reject the plans because it would not help bring the country back together.
