Mr Campbell said: “I don’t think Jeremy can win a majority.”

Mr Clarke replied: “No Jeremy could never become Prime Minister in a thousand years.”

Mr Campbell argued: “He got close last time thought, didn’t he?”

The former Conservative politician then responded: “He’s a bogeyman, he’s been successfully portrayed as a bogeyman.

“Boris’ best argument for voting for him is to say you’ve got to vote for me otherwise you’ll get Jeremy Corbyn.”

Mr Campbell agreed: “I know.”

Mr Clarke continued: “I think what Boris does is blurt it out.

“He uses these Boris phrases, these rather schoolboyish phrases and he larks about.”
